His Eminence was ordained to the priesthood at the Pontifical University in Rome in November of 1958 and was later appointed regional secretary for Catholic education for the eastern part of his country. Then-Bishop Arinze was elected by his brother bishops as president of the Catholic Bishops’ Conference of Nigeria in 1979, a post he held until Pope John Paul II asked him to head the Pontifical Council for Inter-Religious Dialogue; then nominated to his present position.
